...But I Don't Have Time to Read a Book ...

Posted 15 April 2013

One of the most important lessons I’ve learnt in business is that you will only perform to the level of your knowledge.  We each have reached the level we have because of what we know.  To reach a higher level, we need to know some more, and that means Learning.

The Business Book publishing industry is fascinating.  Only on the Foot Spa has more money been spent for a product that sits on a shelf or in a cupboard unused until the short journey to the charity shop.  And the perennial excuse for people not reading the books ?   “Well, I just don’t have the time to read….”

What they actually mean by that is “I just don’t make the time to read.”   The simplest way to expand your knowledge is to take it in one chunk at a time.  Take 20 minutes each lunchtime and read a book.  You’ll be amazed how much you can get through in a year if you commit to that each and every day.  If you spend a lot of time in your car, keep your book there, so that when you’re waiting for your next appointment, or when you’re having that pick-me-up cup of coffee, read a chunk.  Invest in audiobook CDs which you can listen to while you drive, or subscribe to audible.co.uk and download audiobooks for your phone, which you can listen to as you exercise or walk the dog.

As someone once lectured me, “Only in the dictionary does Earn come before Learn” – so if you want to move to the next Level Up in 2013, you’d better find out what else you need to know to get there.
